So we all know at least one person on Instagram who posts pictures of themselves all the time.
We wonder- how many more pictures are you going to take before you realize…we really don’t want to see all 360 degrees of your body, everyday. Instagram has made it so easy to flaunt your narcissism to the world.
Several days ago I ran across these images of a certain Virginia Oldoini(1837-1899). They give a whole new meaning to the word “selfie”.
Virginia Oldoini, Countess de Castiglione was an eccentric Italian aristocrat, famous for her collaborations with court photographer Pierre Louis-Pierson. Together they created over 500 photographic portraits of the Countess. All of them were completely dictated by Virginia. She chose the styling, poses and costumes through which she created her own mysterious persona.
Despite the amount of images taken of her, she still seems like a shadow, a self created phantom straight out of our wildest dreams.
What’s so different about these images? Are they just glorified selfies? Are are they beautiful works of art?
